‘God gives where He finds empty hands’ – St Augustine
If my wife, Kelly and I have learned anything in the experience leading up to and moving to Liverpool it’s this: God wants us to live open-handedly.
Speaking of all of us that call ourselves Christ followers: our lives, our resources, our talents and desires are not really ‘ours.’ Every good and perfect gift is from God (Jm 1:17), and it’s God who gives and takes away (Job 1:21). We are merely stewards of what He entrusts.
A new year is synonymous with a new start, a blank slate. So as we begin this new year, and make all sorts of plans for our future and all the ways we want to grow and develop as individuals, couples, families as a team and a church – let’s live with open hands. Praying that God would give us the desire of our hearts – which when we delight ourselves in Him, it’s actually HIS heart, and HIS desires that will overpower our own selfish desires (Psalm 37:4)!
Ultimately God will have His way. The experience may be painful but lives lived with open hands show a trust and belief in God that a wrestling and prying open of a death-like grip does not. Trust and obey, there is no other way.
